Earlier today, Michael Andretti and Justin Wilson sat down and announced something that Verizon IndyCar Series fans have suspected and hoped for, for the past few months.
Wilson, the Brit who most recently contested the series with Dale Coyne Racing, will be piloting for Andretti Autosport at both the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500. Wilson joins current Indy 500 Champ, Ryan Hunter-Reay as well as Michael Andretti & Carlos Munoz.
Andretti explained that he’s wanted to get Justin in car with them for 4-5 years, and he credits Honda for finally making it happen. They had a few deals working in the off-season, one for a full ride and another for 4-5 races, that fell through. Andretti’s goal is to turn these couple races into a longer partnering with Wilson, who commented that he has been training hard the past few months, “It feels great to have something to focus on and to have the dates of when it’s going to happen.” Wilson also mentioned how thankful he was to drive for Dale Coyne, confirming they are still great friends.
Andretti noted that they want to run 5 cars at this year’s 500 and he touched upon the situation with Simona de Silvestro, stating they are hoping to have her drive with them for more than just this weekend. “Everyone was really impressed with her test, not just by her pace but by what she offered outside the car.”
I will be trackside at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg all weekend. Make sure you bookmark MTAF Wheels and my author page for all the latest news. As always, if you have requests for photos, or questions for particular drivers, send them my way and I will do my best to accommodate!
