The race stewards for the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season were announced earlier this morning as Arie Luyendyk, Max Papis and Dan Davis. The combined resumes of the three individuals is extensive, boasting two Indianapolis 500 victories, two Rolex 24 at Daytona wins, two 12 Hours of Sebring wins, and 40 years of auto industry experience at General Motors and Ford Motor Company, as well as on-track careers throughout IndyCar, Formula 1 and SportsCar series.
Luyendyk, Papis and Davis will report to the INDYCAR president of competition and operations, Jay Frye, who spoke on the decision-making process for this seasons impressive panel of stewards,
“Our desire was to assemble a team with varied backgrounds that would work together to move INDYCAR forward in the area of monitoring on-track competition,” Frye said. “Being a race steward requires thorough knowledge and consistent interpretation of the rules, as well as the ability to enact them with resolve. This is the right group to do that.”
The official press release went on to further explain the expectations of the stewards and guidelines for the position: “The three stewards will oversee on-track action from race control via video and audio monitors, electronic data and communication with teams and race officials. Any one of the stewards may call for review of an on-track incident, at which time they will review collectively to determine if an infraction occurred and whether to impose a penalty – which will be determined by a majority vote.”
The newly instated stewards are expected to be on site at Phoenix International Raceway for media availability this Friday, though their attendance during the weekend test is unknown. Fans in the area however, are welcome to attend the series promoter test, or #PrixView, this Saturday, February 27th. Two on-track sessions, photo ops with a show car and a nearly full-field driver autograph session are the highlights of the free weekend event!
