Earlier this week, the entry list for the Verizon IndyCar Series return to Road America was released. The name of Josef Newgarden was listed as the driver of the No. 21 Direct Supply Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet – a surprising listing, seeing that he suffered fractures to the wrist and clavicle at the start of last week. The injuries occurred during a very scary crash at the Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, June 12th.
The Firestone 600 race was delayed multiple times over the weekend due to rain, and ultimately suspended with a restart date of August 27th. The accident happened during the live race.
The question was raised about whether Newgarden was actually medically cleared to drive yet – and it turns out he wasn’t. However, Ed Carpenter Racing confirmed on Thursday that Newgarden has now been cleared for the two Verizon IndyCar Series Kohler Grand Prix practice sessions on Friday, June 26th. The first session starts at 12:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. CT for 75 minutes and will be broadcast live on NBCSN. The second session starts at 4:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m.CT for 75 minutes and will be livestreamed.
Once Newgarden has completed these practice sessions, he will be reevaluated. The findings of that evaluation will determine if Newgarden is cleared to continue on for the race weekend. If he is not cleared to continue, J.R. Hildebrand will pilot the No. 21 for the remaining practice and qualifying sessions on Saturday, as well as the morning warm up on Sunday and of course the Kohler Grand Prix at Road America that afternoon.
