Abbreviated Race #1 in Detroit Doubles the Fun for Honda & Andretti

The first race of the lone doubleheader weekend on this year’s Verizon IndyCar Series schedule ended earlier than anticipated and in a fashion not completely uncommon to this sport. Weather plays a big factor in how race cars operate, how drivers handle said machines and how the results of any given contest play out. Today was one of those circumstances and it was ultimately decided by IndyCar, to end the red-flagged event and finalize results as they stood on Lap 47. The driver of the Andretti Autosport No. 26 Honda, sponsored by shopandretti.com had been waiting on this day for … Continue reading Abbreviated Race #1 in Detroit Doubles the Fun for Honda & Andretti

Saturday Morning’s Front of Field Breakdown; Race #1 Likely in the Wet

Today’s morning practice showed some good signs for Honda Racing. For a good portion of the session, A.J. Foyt Racing drivers Jack Hawksworth and Takuma Sato ran first and second with Graham Rahal rounding out the top 3. There was a single red flag for an incident involving the driver of the No. 11 KVSH Racing car, Sebastien Bourdais. He made contact with the tire barrier and unfortunately, was severe enough for a crane to be brought on track in order to remove the vehicle. People I spoke with on pit lane reported that Bourdais had exited the vehicle safely, … Continue reading Saturday Morning’s Front of Field Breakdown; Race #1 Likely in the Wet

Doubleheader in Detroit Accompanied by Drizzle

I haven’t been to Detroit since this past winter when I attended the North American International Auto Show at the Cobo Center. I enjoy attending that show because it’s a great way to break up the long off-season and enjoy incredible cars, even if they are silent. This weekend in Detroit, in stark contrast, is anything but quiet. The Chevrolet Dual in Detroit kicks off this weekend and with four motorsport series gracing the pavement of Belle Isle, you are guaranteed one heck of a show over the next three days. If you’re in the area on Friday, make sure … Continue reading Doubleheader in Detroit Accompanied by Drizzle

IndyCar 2015: Ready, Set, Race – Part I of II

Here we go. The 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season is set in place. Dates, locations, times and broadcast syndicates are all public knowledge. Media and fans alike can plan their Spring & Summer travel and they can look forward to yet another incredible year of race competition. While some teams and drivers are as solid as the schedule, some combinations are yet to be announced or even determined. Where will Ryan Briscoe end up? Who will drive for Bryan Herta Autosport? Will there be any new teams or drivers added to the full season? Certainly there is a plethora of … Continue reading IndyCar 2015: Ready, Set, Race – Part I of II

Castroneves Climbs Fence & Points Board

The second dual in Detroit was not as much a fight to the finish as the first dual this weekend, with Helio Castroneves putting 13 seconds between himself and P2 at one point and ultimately winning by nearly 2 seconds at the finish line. Although less of a nail-biter than the battle between Will Power & Graham Rahal on Saturday, the second dual was still very crucial in the points standings for the season.  Will Power has stated that he does not pay attention to the points board, especially this early in the season, but I think that’s also easier … Continue reading Castroneves Climbs Fence & Points Board

Sato Surprises, Breaks Record in Detroit

The different format of this morning’s Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit – Dual II qualifications yielded a red flag, record breaking runs and even some premature celebration. The first group had a relatively uneventful 12 minutes on track, included Andretti Autosport driver James Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe led the group with the fastest lap, clocking in at 1:16.3739 and breaking the current track set-ups record. That record was only a day old, as Helio Castroneves had set it on Saturday with a time of 1:17.2597. Hinchcliffe has yet to attain that first pole position in his IndyCar career – and today looked … Continue reading Sato Surprises, Breaks Record in Detroit

Dual in Detroit – Dual II Qualifications Format

Yesterday morning I broke down the typical qualifying format with the Verizon IndyCar Series – the segmented process that leads to the Firestone Fast 6 and then the Verizon P1 Award. Today, we will have a different qualifying format for the second dual in the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit. The field will still be split into two groups, but these will be determined by the combined times ranking from Friday’s two practice sessions. The drivers in the even-numbered positions will be in Group 1 and the drivers in the odd-numbered positions will be in Group 2. According to that, … Continue reading Dual in Detroit – Dual II Qualifications Format

Power & Rahal put the DUAL in Detroit

Well. That was crazy. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Heck, I said it as recently as my articles this afternoon… The Verizon IndyCar Series is the definition of unpredictable. This afternoon proved it to be true, yet again. Even the winner of the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit I… agrees! In his post-race presser, Team Penske driver Will Power stated, “This is IndyCar and ANYTHING can happen. And it does.” Will Power found himself in the Winner’s Circle again, a territory he is not unfamiliar with. Oh and by the way, he made it there by … Continue reading Power & Rahal put the DUAL in Detroit

Helio & Hinch Will Lead Field to Green in Detroit Dual I

Helio Castroneves achieved his first series career win on Belle Isle back in 2000. Today he starts from the pole position in Dual I of the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit. Castroneves out-raced James Hinchcliffe, Jack Hawksworth, Mike Conway, Ryan Briscoe and Penske teammate, Juan Pablo Montoya in the Firestone Fast 6 competition to attain the Verizon P1 award earlier today. This will be the third time Castroneves starts on pole at Belle Isle and certainly he will be going for his third win here this weekend. Three seems to be his number right now – literally and figuratively. He … Continue reading Helio & Hinch Will Lead Field to Green in Detroit Dual I
