Newgarden earns third career pole, IndyCar field set to race at Barber

Only 4 Verizon IndyCar Series drivers in the field of 23 at Barber Motorsports Park have found victory at this 2.3-mile road course. Interestingly, 3 of those drivers have won twice – Will Power (No. 12 Verizon Chevy, Team Penske), in 2011 and 2012, Ryan Hunter-Reay (No. 28 DHL Honda, Andretti Autosport) in 2013 and 2014, and Josef Newgarden (No. 1 Hitachi Chevy, Team Penske) in 2015 with CFH Racing and 2017 with Team Penske. Qualifying statistics are equally segmented, with only 4 names to the title. That is, until today. Helio Castroneves won pole twice here, with Pagenaud and … Continue reading Newgarden earns third career pole, IndyCar field set to race at Barber

Power and Wickens are ones to watch in Saturday Qualifying at Barber

Alright. I’m pretty sure Turn 5 at Barber Motorsports Park has its own gravitational pull. That pull is strongest when Indy cars are in orbit nearby.  The No. 10 Ganassi Honda of Ed Jones ended up triggering the first red flag of practice, when he needed assistance from AMR Rescue to be pulled from the grips of the tumultuous Turn. Jones is fresh off the podium from Long Beach and there is a good chance he was pushing his car to the limit to find those boundaries before quals today. The 2017 Sunoco Rookie of the year has had mixed … Continue reading Power and Wickens are ones to watch in Saturday Qualifying at Barber

Pigot shows promise, Newgarden claims top spot in afternoon practice laden with reds

Friday at Barber Motorsports Park was brought to you by the number 5 and the color red. Turn 5 was the place to be during today’s Verizon IndyCar Series practices, and according to fastest-in-session Newgarden, it was due to the strong winds. Particularly, the direction of those strong winds. “Today was very difficult with the wind conditions. It was kind of behind us going into Turn 5, it was behind us going into Turn 12, and that’s the most difficult wind direction you’re going to drive around here, and I think it’s going to flip 180 tomorrow.” Newgarden actually started … Continue reading Pigot shows promise, Newgarden claims top spot in afternoon practice laden with reds

Power cruises to the top in Barber practice, Newgarden takes a detour

Two-time Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama winner Will Power topped practice 1 at Barber Motorsports Park this morning with a 1:07.5987 lap in the No. 12 Team Penske Verizon Chevy. Teammate Josef Newgarden, who coincidentally has also come out victorious at this track twice, was just a sliver over three-tenths of a second slower, coming in P2. Scott Dixon was the fastest Honda, with his No. 9 PNC machine clocking a best lap of 1:08.2627. The Chip Ganassi Racing Teams driver has landed on the podium in 7 of the 8 races that the series has run at Barber. … Continue reading Power cruises to the top in Barber practice, Newgarden takes a detour

Rainy Raceday Start as Penske Prepares to Further Replicate Success in Alabama

It’s raining this morning at Barber Motorsports Park, which can only mean one thing… it’s Verizon IndyCar Series raceday in Alabama! The 8th Annual Honda Grand Prix of Alabama will go green at 2:42pm (local time) this afternoon. Notice I say that it will, not that it should. I have full confidence that we are going to get this done today, rooster tails and all! The good thing is that I haven’t seen any lightning or heard any thunder this morning. Let’s keep that trend going! Team Penske is also aiming to continue trends at Barber, and yesterday was a … Continue reading Rainy Raceday Start as Penske Prepares to Further Replicate Success in Alabama

Pagenaud Continues 2016 Hot Streak in the Sunny South

He has stood on the podium for every race in the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season thus far. Today he earned the Verizon P1 Award in qualifying for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Simon Pagenaud has certainly received his fair share of southern hospitality over the past 2 months. Back in St. Pete in March, the Frenchman qualified P2 but ended up starting from the pole when his teammate and pole winner, Will Power, fell ill and was unable to compete. Oriol Servia ended up piloting the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevy as Pagenaud led the field … Continue reading Pagenaud Continues 2016 Hot Streak in the Sunny South

AJ Foyt Racing Impresses in Alabama

AJ Foyt Racing ended Friday at Barber Motorsports Park with a 1-2 finish at the conclusion of both practice sessions. Takuma Sato (No. 14 Honda) and Jack Hawksworth (No. 41 Honda) ran fastest laps with nearly identical times, separated by only four-thousandths of a second. Sato even put his hands up at the post-practice presser, holding them about 6 inches apart and said, “Yes, I believe it was about this much!” Hawksworth showed consistency with a P2 finish in both Friday practices and Sato is one of eight drivers that has competed in all Indy car events at Barber. This … Continue reading AJ Foyt Racing Impresses in Alabama
