Robert Wickens and Ryan Hunter-Reay topped timing and scoring this morning, with their Honda-powered beasts. Wickens, behind the wheel of the No. 6 Lucas SPM car was the only driver in the final practice to break the 1:43 mark with a 1:42.991 lap. Hunter-Reay was ever-so-slightly trailing with a 1:43.172 best time in the No. 28 DHL Andretti Autosport ride. Simon Pagenaud was the fastest running Chevy, and his day-glo yellow No. 22 Menards Team Penske machine was the only bowtie in the Top 5, with Alexander Rossi (No. 27 Napa Andretti Autosport Honda) and Graham Rahal (No. 15 Gehl … Continue reading Wickens shows speed in final practice before Road America qualifying, leads field

Power and Wickens are ones to watch in Saturday Qualifying at Barber

Alright. I’m pretty sure Turn 5 at Barber Motorsports Park has its own gravitational pull. That pull is strongest when Indy cars are in orbit nearby.  The No. 10 Ganassi Honda of Ed Jones ended up triggering the first red flag of practice, when he needed assistance from AMR Rescue to be pulled from the grips of the tumultuous Turn. Jones is fresh off the podium from Long Beach and there is a good chance he was pushing his car to the limit to find those boundaries before quals today. The 2017 Sunoco Rookie of the year has had mixed … Continue reading Power and Wickens are ones to watch in Saturday Qualifying at Barber

Hinchcliffe Identifies Rare Canadian Bird at Watkins Glen

(WATKINS GLEN, NY) – James Hinchcliffe is everyone’s favorite funny-guy in the paddock, but when he gets behind the wheel of that black and gold No. 5 Arrow SPM Honda, he’s all business. And today, that business was ornithology. We’ve learned a lot about Hinch recently – first it was his natural talent of dance, then his campaigning abilities to get more votes than most political candidates, and more recently it was revealed that Hinchcliffe is quite the birding enthusiast. He kicked off the month of May with this unveiling:   #AngryBird sighting in Slo-Mo. #IndyCar #IndyCarGP pic.twitter.com/Ha4UlHGuHn — Matt … Continue reading Hinchcliffe Identifies Rare Canadian Bird at Watkins Glen

Dixon and Howard Survive Terrifying Crash at ‘500’

The tub that IndyCar drivers slide into as they prepare to race is called a survival shell. Today just further signified why it is termed as such and just how much it lives up to it’s name. Chip Ganassi driver Scott Dixon, the polesitter for the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500, had nowhere to go on Lap 53 in the short chute between Turns 1 and 2 when Jay Howard made contact with the outside wall and slid down the track toward the infield. Dixon had a head-on impact with the left side of the No. 77 SPM Team … Continue reading Dixon and Howard Survive Terrifying Crash at ‘500’

Verizon IndyCar Series team owner and former driver, Sam Schmidt, will take on Indianapolis 500 champion, Mario Andretti in what is sure to be a spectacle in it’s own right. Power Earns 45th IndyCar Pole, 7th at St. Pete

Will Power, man. Do you think his parents had any clue how true his name would ring in his future career? The Team Penske driver earned his 45th IndyCar career pole position today on the Streets of St. Petersburg. It’s safe to say he has a very stable relationship with the circuit. He has now grabbed 7 poles out of 11 attempts. Tomorrow will be his 6th start from P1, given that he earned the same position last year but due to illness, was not cleared by medical to compete on race day. He’s one of two active drivers to … Continue reading Power Earns 45th IndyCar Pole, 7th at St. Pete

Dixon Tops Final Practice with Hinchcliffe on his Heels

While James’ Hinchcliffe’s former dance partner, Sharna Burgess from Dancing with the Stars, would frown upon James leading with his heels, the rest of us are fine with him being on the figurative heels of the driver in front of him in order to make track action more interesting. In this case, it was Practice 3 of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg that he made interesting. Trailing Scott Dixon (No. 9, Ganassi Racing) by only .0004 of a second. Don’t lie, you can’t even comprehend how small a moment in time that is. I know I can’t. What … Continue reading Dixon Tops Final Practice with Hinchcliffe on his Heels

Dixon on Sneak Attack, Takes Pole from Castroneves in Toronto

Let’s pick up where we left off… the last line of the last paragraph of my last post was: “[Dixon is] a beast and currently fourth in points, so keep an eye on him this weekend. The No. 9 crew has kept it clean, lying relatively low in Toronto… and that’s Dixon’s favorite time to attack.” Historically, I have not been a fan of making predictions with results but lately it’s been fun just following my gut instinct, comparing stats, and taking my personal observation of the field action from trackside into account and trying to “call it”! With the … Continue reading Dixon on Sneak Attack, Takes Pole from Castroneves in Toronto
